An extra week of fun for Vale outdoor pool and splashpads announced

Issued 27 August 2024

There is great news at Abbey Meadow with an extra week announced for the outdoor pool and splashpad.

GLL, who manage the outdoor pools and splash pads on behalf of Vale of White Horse District Council, has agreed to an extension to the opening season this year.

Abbey Meadow outside pool and splash pad in Abingdon, will now stay open a week later than anticipated.

The pool and splash pad would usually close on 1 September. Taking into account the predicted good weather and timing with schools returning, the plan is now to extend the opening until Sunday 8 September to allow everyone more time to make the most of these popular facilities.

The kiosk at Abbey Meadow will also remain open until Sunday 8 September to cater for any hungry visitors.

Vale of White Horse District Council has also confirmed the splash pad at Manor Road Memorial Park, Wantage, which is looked after by the council’s parks team, will be also available until Sunday 8 September.

Visitors are advised to plan ahead for any visit to Abbey Meadow on Saturday 7 September. An event in the park will mean the closure of the road and the car park at Abbey Close. Alternative parking is available at the Civic car park in front of Abbey House, Cattlemarket, Audlett Drive and Rye Farm car parks.

Cllr Sue Caul, Vale of White Horse Cabinet member for leisure facilities, said: “I’m delighted we can extend the summer fun for longer this year! It’s always great to see how much enjoyment children and families get from the pool at Abbey Meadow and given the good weather it is fantastic they have an extra week to enjoy the pool, splash pad and kiosk. It is also great news the splash pad in Manor Road Memorial Park will be available for an extra week too.”

Kevin Williams, GLL Partnership Manager – South Oxfordshire and Vale of White Horse,  added: “We know that the pool and splashpads at Abbey Meadow are hugely valued by local residents and visitors alike.  With the weather forecast looking promising over the final weeks of the summer holidays, it made sense to extend the opening hours, to give even more people the chance to enjoy these wonderful, open-air, community facilities.”
